The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is set to hear a slew of major cases in 2024 that will have implications across a variety of political areas. The high court is likely to take up some of the most contentious social issues, such as those involving the January 6 Capitol rioters, abortion, and gun rights.
In terms of the Jan 6 rioters, the court will be asked to decide whether or not any potential improper conduct or inaction by law enforcement officials can serve as a legal defense for members of the mob. The justices are also likely to weigh in on a case concerning the legality of restrictions on abortions, as well as a long-awaited challenge to state and local regulations on the purchase and ownership of firearms.
The court is also expected to consider a series of free speech cases surrounding Andy Ngo, a journalist who says he was the target of an internet smear campaign by far left activists. The cases could have a big impact on how freedom of the press and speech are upheld in an age of social media.
In addition, SCOTUS is expected to take up a major class action labor lawsuit challenging Henderson Gaming’s employment practices. Finally, the justices could be asked to rule over the contentious issue of environmental liability for contaminating land and otherwise impacting the environment. These cases will shape 2022 and form a major part of the political discourse.
