Telescopes spot the oldest and most distant black hole formed after the big bang

Using the largest telescopes on Earth and in space, astronomers have spotted the oldest and most distant supermassive black hole ever found. Known as J0313-1806, the black hole formed only 690 million years after the big bang, more than 13 billion years ago, and holds the equivalent mass of 800 million suns. It is located about 13 billion light-years away from Earth, in the constellation Lepus (the Hare). This discovery marks an early point of cosmic evolution that astronomers did not have access to until now.
